In December 2011, Minister Joan Burton introduced a range of measures to “reform” lone parents in receipt of the One Parent Family Payment. She promised not to proceed with any cuts unless she could also introduce affordable childcare. There is no affordable childcare, yet she plans to proceed. From July 2015, lone parents with children of 7 and older will no longer be entitled to the One Parent Family Payment.
These reforms have no immediate financial impact for non-working lone parents, but for working lone parents and those in education, the effects have been devastating. A lone parent with 1 child, working 20 hours per week on minimum wage, will lose a total of €108 per week after all the measures are implemented.
One parent families are the poorest people in society. According to EU SILC 2013, 23% of one parent families live in consistent poverty. This is almost three times higher than the general population (8.2%). If these cuts are allowed to proceed, we are condemning a generation of children to deprivation and poverty.
We are asking people to stand up for our children and help stop these savage measures.
