Dave Lordan Schools Workshops

I am Ireland’s leading provider and innovator in Teenage Creative Writing teaching and curriculum design and development.

With each school visit I offer FREE EXPERT ADVICE SESSIONS for teachers interested in creative writing teaching and curriculum design.

I have delivered workshops in creative writing/ performance writing/ communications skills/ in over 200 primary and secondary schools in the last ten years. I can deliver workshops from one hour long all the way up to term-length programmes. I can give special workshops tied-in with, for example, Environmental Week, Anti-Bullying Week, etc.

I can teach whole class groups, or focus groups of talented teens producing a magazine, book, website, comic book, performance showcase/short film/podcast etc

In 2014/15 I toured a number of schools giving highly successful inspirational anti-bullying and self-esteem building talks and workshops. My well known anti-bullying poem for teens Because I am Human will shortly be made into an educational and inspirational poetry film.

In 2015-2016, in partnership with director Padraic Burke of runawaypenguin.com I am introducing film-making workshops – aimed at talented teens who we will guide to script and make their own short film.

2015-16 will also see the roll out of podcasting workshops – working with students and accessible technologies to produce radio quality broadcasts for schools on themes and topics of school’s choice and for school and local broadcast.

I am a nationally and internationally recognised and multi-award winning author, performer, and editor and my work is regularly broadcast, published, and reviewed in the national and international media. I can answer any question students may have about writing and the writing industry today.

My Record

Every July since 2012 I have taught hugely successful week long courses for talented teenagers at the West Cork Literary Festival.

In 2012 I founded the Dublin  Young Authors – a Saturday morning programme for talented teens, which I now run in partnership with Penguin books Editor Claire Hennessy

I was the first to direct and produce a teen performance poetry showcase at an Irish literary festival- at the Dublin Writers Festival in 2013. I have successfully produced over 20 teen showcase events in schools, libraries, youth clubs and festival venues.

I founded, designed and organised the Wraparound programme for special needs and disadvantaged students in partnership with the JCSP Library Service.

I have worked with Inspireland, the slam poetry programme for TY’s, since 2008.

I work regularly with teenagers in libraries in Dublin, Wicklow, Cork, and Kildare, supported by local library services.

I design and deliver training course  in Teaching Creativity at Mater Dei Institute of Education and The Irish Writers Centre

My Testimonials

“I feel that Dave’s programme was one of the most successful events we have had for teens in the library. The group that he worked with were very diverse in terms of personality, likes and interests and literacy levels and Dave was capable of encouraging the whole group to participate in the project. He is also very good at forming a rapport with the young people and encouraging them to be supportive and positive about their own work and the work of others. In a very short amount of time all of the participants produced a vibrant and worthwhile piece of work and received positive feedback from Dave and their peers which definitely boosted their self-confidence. They are all very eager to work with Dave again, as is the library staff.”

Margaret Curley, Coolock Library Librarian and Voluntary Literacy Tutor.

“We had two workshops with Dave Lordan. He was working with a mixed group ranging in age from 10 – 13 years. They really enjoyed the workshop and still talk about what they did in the workshops to their peers. Dave Lordan’s approach to his work and to the young people help create and open and honest atmosphere where “it’s ok to be yourself”, thus building confidence for young people. His approach works well with the ethos behind Youthwork.”

Tara Coleman, Youth Worker, Sphere 17 Youth Club, Coolock.

Dave Lordan’s two day visit to West Cork Arts Centre covered a lot of ground. Whether encouraging primary school children to create an imaginary country, writing group poems with second level students, advising a young rap group on their writing, doing readings for mental health service users, or discussing the pedagogy of creativity with teachers, Dave’s energy and obvious passion for words and the imagination, is infectious. His professionalism and ability to adapt to work in different contexts within a short time-frame was impressive.

“Our inaugural Creative Writing Workshop for Teenage Writers, which was designed and led by Dave Lordan, was one of the great successes of this year’s West Cork Literary Festival. It sold out very quickly, and participants travelled from all around the country to take part. Parents expressed their appreciation that a workshop aimed specifically at creative teenagers was available. In this course, Dave concentrated on the participants’ creativity, without limiting it to writing, which allowed them to develop a very broad spectrum of artistic skills. One young man, for example, was invited by renowned author Dava Sobel to perform a section of her play during her own headline event. A young woman, who had insisted on the first day that she would never do a public reading, nonetheless read her extraordinary piece about the Christchurch earthquake on the following Friday. Several of the group, with Dave’s guidance, volunteered to take part in our Amnesty International Writers at Risk campaign, which involved reading to huge audiences, in front of world-class authors. Dave’s work on this involved helping the group to write and edit their pieces, coaching them in public speaking, and giving moral support at the event. Having young people involved, like this, in many aspects of our programme was an asset to the festival – and would not have been possible without Dave. His dedication to his group was extraordinary. He made himself available to them around the clock, which in fact made it possible for the WCLF to hold this workshop in the first place. The group produced brilliant work in the classroom sessions and their performances at a special reading on the final day were also a testament to Dave’s hard work. Several parents spoke to me in moving terms about what this very special week in Bantry had meant to their children, and so to them, and this is entirely due to Dave’s talent, dedication, and sensitivity. I very much enjoyed working with him, and look forward to repeating the workshop again next year – with Dave at the helm.”

Dave Lordan’s Workshops were a real treat. He managed to bring out the students’ creative side in a really fun and engaging way. Many of these students discovered sides of themselves that hadn’t been explored before. Highly recommended.’

Stephen Doherty, JCSP Librarian, Wicklow Community College

Dave Lordan did a series of creative writing workshops with primary and secondary students as part of our Dublin 8 One Liberties, One Book project. He was great to work with.He pitched his sessions at a level that allowed children of all abilities to participate. He dealt very skillfully with all eight groups and succeeded in getting them not just to produce work but in many cases to present it to the rest of the class. There was lots of fun, laughter and enthusiasm in the session.Dave’s preparation and the time he took to liaise with us before embarking on the sessions was very valuable. He was very easy to deal with and very flexible in responding to our needs. I look forward to working with Dave again and would highly recommend his workshops to others.
