The Bogman’s Cannon Guide to Culture Night

Bogman’s Cannon contributors are taking part in a wide array of culture night events all over Ireland:

In Clonakilty, the West Cork Capital of Culture, Tina Pisco is the new artist in residence at the Clonakilty Community Arts centre and has put together a great evening of poetry, song, drama and music – including the virtuoso harp of Anja Bakker and the soul-poems of Tina Pisco flowing together into the unique performance experience that is Gifted Eccentric, as well as short plays from the now well-established Tig an Astna Players.

In Letterkenny the very brilliant pairing of Annemarie Ni Churreain and Breda Wall Ryan will read at an event organised by North WestWords in Letterkenny. Music by Damian Gallagher. Venue: Cafe Blend. Events kick off at 8pm. Find a short interview with Annemarie here about her recent stay at the Heinrich Böll Cottage

The Books Upstairs poetry event on D’Olier street features an inspiring combination of Rita Ann Higgins and Michael O’Loughlin – a preview of their forthcoming appearances at Double Shot – and will be headlined by Dublin’s most popular and uplifting contemporary poet  Karl Parkinson – the artistic director of The Bogman’s Cannon.

In Greystones Library –  an adapted Carnegie with a sea view worth seeing in itself – Dave Lordan will run a creative writing workshop for 13 – 17 year olds from 5pm until 7pm in Greystones Library.

Galway’s Over the Edge is surely Ireland’s most active, hard-working and least bureaucratic literary organisation and it has always placed a premium on the public interface between writers and their audience. True to form it is holding two special Culture Night open-mics – one for fiction writers, the other for poets – with prizes for the best readers, at Kenny’s Bookshop & Gallery, Liosbán Retail Park, Tuam Road, Galway on Friday, September 18th. The open mic for fiction writers starts at 4pm. Participants should bring along two pages of a story to read. The open mic for poets starts at 6pm. Participants poets should bring along two poems to read. The evening will be MCed by Kevin Higgins and will also see a reading from their long-listed stories and poems by some of the writers on the long list for the 2015 Over The Edge New Writer of The Year competition, for which Kenny’s is one of the generous sponsors. All long-listed writers, who can make it to Kenny’s on the day, are invited to come and read.

Also in Galway Mighty Bogwan Elaine Feeney recommends checking out Galway Women in the Wider World – a people’s history event organised by historians John Cunningham and Conor Mcnamara:
