WE NEED A NEW NATIONAL THEATRE – THE ABBEY IS DEAD

Great to see the theatre community stand up to the two ignoramuses running the Abbey Theatre. I hope they take the hint and feck off.

I’d also like to see a complete rethink of the question of what is a ‘national theatre’ – as the Abbey absurdly claims to be, despite the fact that 99 per cent of the irish nation has no interest in it whatsoever, and the Abbey Theatre shows even less interest in them.

We have so much talent in theatre, and so many young people whose talents are in development – why can’t we have them employed by the state to perform original contemporary work to the actual nation – in small towns and villages all over the country?

Rather than have them eternally stuck in Dublin City Centre, which is an unattractive place for many at night and impossible to access in the evening time for nearly the whole nation, performing adaptations and reruns of old plays no longer relevant for busloads of tourists & ageing posh people?
